Doctors Hospital/OhioHealth Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program is on the west side of Columbus, Ohio.  The mission of our Orthopedic residency program is to create a legacy of compassionate physicians who excel in the practice of general orthopedic surgery and are well prepared to successfully practice independently or successfully upon complete of a fellowship program. Our program strives to be recognized by our positive impact on the community, our skillset, our personal relationships and our commitment to furthering orthopedic knowledge.

As the AOAO was established at Doctors Hospital in 1941, the residency program began in 1951.  H.E. Clybourne, DO was a founding father of the AOAO and The Doctors Hospital orthopedic surgery residency program.  At that time, the program consisted of one resident per year and totaled three years.  Our compliment is now five residents per year.

Alumni from our program have gone on to notable fellowships and continue to be leading orthopedic surgeons in our country.  Most recently, our graduating residents have completed fellowships in pediatrics at Stanford, foot/ankle and trauma at Duke, upper extremity at the Mayo Clinic.  From 1944-1999, 10 past AOAO presidents have come from our program.  Dr. Terry Philbin (AOAO president 2019-20) continues to serve as core faculty.   Finally, three of our graduates have received the Donald Siehl Award and three have received the Morton Morris Award.

Today, our program provides diverse training environments – from a smaller community hospitals and outpatient surgery centers to busy academic medical centers that are national leaders in pediatric and adult specialties and subspecialties.  These sites include Riverside Methodist Hospital, Grant Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.  All of our rotations are within the city limits.  With a state-of-the-art Simulation lab, we pair didactics, lectures and curriculum with meaningful research opportunities.  The program structure balances mentored and resident-directed practice as we care for our patients and learn to master surgical skills.
